Woohoo reveal days are the best! And this reveal, in particular, is so near and dear to my heart that I have been busting at the seams to share it. I had the chance to surprise a family with a spring makeover courtesy of Lowe’s. You may notice that it was a spring makeover and we did in fact complete it right in the midst of spring but April showers were pretty relentless this year and derailed our plans for photos several times. Luckily the sun was shining this past week and we were finally able to capture everything.
If you missed the back story let me recap a little…
I chose homeowners, Hadley and Gentry, because I believe they deserve a gift more than anyone. They lost their two precious sons just a short year ago in a car accident. This was a story that gripped all of Charlotte and many other cities far and wide. Along with countless others I have watched their story unfold over the last 365 days. I stand in awe of their resilience, their faith, and their drive to live a purposeful life of which their sons would be so proud. Hadley also just so happens to teach at my kids preschool so we already knew and loved her. I had no idea she would be submitting an application but when I saw her name I was elated. When people go through hard things, unimaginable things you feel paralyzed on how to help. What can you really do for someone suffering such a loss? Although they are surrounded by love and prayer I was so grateful for the opportunity to go physically do something for this precious family.
Hadley and I….
Gentry pitching in…
A makeover can’t heal their wounds but our efforts to beautify this space hopefully reminded them once again how loved they truly are. And not just from those of us who know them personally. The volunteers from their local Lowe’s store were amazing. They showed up with big smiles ready to put in a lot of sweat. They were also a huge help in picking the right plants and making sure they were planted properly.
And I also had a gang of girls from our preschool show up to help with this special makeover! With all these hands we quickly turned this blank slate into a colorful, welcoming, & fresh space!
Let’s take a look back at the before…
A great patio but desperate for some personality. We infused it with color and pattern by raiding the garden section of Lowe’s and then threw in tons of great decor products.
The main thing the family wanted was a place where friends and family could gather and hang out. We chose this set that can easily be rearranged for get togethers and leaves room to even add some seating down the road should they want to.
This indoor/outdoor console table is my favorite piece of the makeover. It’s the perfect spot to stage wine or snacks and it looks pretty enough to be in a living room!
We used potted plants and a trellis to help encase this seating area. The trellis idea came to me one day and is another favorite. We simply stuck the trellis in this wooden box planter and used soil and flowers to help weigh it down. We used zip ties to attach the small pots along the trellis.
Another special addition were two trees we planted in honor of their sons. I can’t wait until they mature a little more and provide a nice shady spot in their yard.
Now I know I have used the word “favorite” twice already but the screened porch is my favorite favorite! As soon as I saw it and heard they wanted a porch swing I got super excited about this space! Here is the before…
The quickest and easiest way to make an outdoor space feel like an extension of your home is to add lighting. We exchange the builder boring flush mount for this Kichler Lighting Arena Cove black lantern and it made a world of difference.
When designing the screened porch I envisioned everything I would want while having my morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. That included a table for my magazines and glass.
A patterned rug, the Allen + Roth Maysburg navy rug, cute pillows and a throw.
Pretty, good smelling flowers.
And a barcart! This Modway all weather wicker barcart looks great and can withstand all the elements!
To give the porch swing a more nautical feel, I wrapped the chain with rope.
And the (human) owners are not the only ones loving this space…Addie made herself right at home!
I want to give a big THANK YOU to Lowe’s for making this makeover possible. Not only do they come up with these great ideas and ways to give back to people but they are so easy to work with. From the corporate staff who handles all of the behind-the-scenes details to the staff at the stores, they really have a heart for their customers and I am so glad to be a part of it.
And thank you to Hadley and Gentry for letting us invade your space for a weekend! I hope it is a place you will enjoy for years to come (…Addie too!)

A beautiful space for a beautiful family!!! Beth you did an amazing job and like you said, this won’t heal their wounds but it’s got to make them feel loved and take a huge project off of their to-do list which is worth wonders! Great job friend!
