I am in major “finish it” mode this summer. I can go for long periods of time just walking by an unfinished project and pretending it doesn’t exist but when the mood finally strikes you better get out of my way! Luckily my kids really don’t care what is on their walls or if they have cool throw pillows so they didn’t even notice that they were living in a half-finished space for almost a year!
We started turning their playroom into a shared bedroom back in September in preparation for Harper’s arrival. I married into a hard-working and handy family so I put those boys to work…
The major project for this crew was putting up paneling on the walls.
It was a tedious project but they managed to finish completely in a weekend.
I was inspired by this nursery which is one of my all-time favorite blogger rooms…
It’s so good, right?!
So back to my house, we finished the paneling, bought twin beds, bedding, and moved around the furniture and then I hit the wall. I had ideas but no motivation for awhile.
What really got me moving again was a couple of yards of fabric I bought forever ago.
I originally planned to make pillows but decided I wanted to use it on the walls instead. This simple DIY project was the kick I had been needing and I am happy to say the room is complete. Well as complete as it is going to be until I find a new dresser. But until then, here it is…
I purposely left lots of open floor space since I have banished all toys to this room.
Sullivan did great for my little photo shoot but in reality this room usually looks like a bomb went off!
That open space up there over the bed was screaming for something and that’s when I got the idea to use my fabric as art. I simply covered some left over foam board.
As I said, I keep all of their toys in this room so we needed storage.
I was impressed with how much stuff the IKEA Expedit unit can really hold!
The starting point, and my favorite part of this room, is the basket pendant light from West Elm.
I snagged this for $35 on clearance in the store!
It is so nice to have this room crossed of my list for the time-being!
I will share my new favorite way to hang pictures soon because after discovering it while hanging these fabric canvases, I think I have found the easiest way possible!
I will also share my source list in a later post…right now I have two small boys tugging my legs to go to the pool…

I love your boys' room, Beth! The paneled walls add so much interest with your angled ceiling and that large window. I'm loving that light fixture!

Thank you so much! I have never been a big fan of those large odd-shaped windows but this paneling definitely makes it more bearable!

Love the paneling. I am thinking of doing a similar thing in my girl's bedroom… did you follow a tutorial or just wing it?
desingpostinteriors@hotmail.com says
If you look at the link for the nursery I quoted as inspiration they have a great tutorial. We loosely followed that but we also had to tweak for our vaulted ceilings.

beth – that room is SUPER duper cute! i love it! i love the decor, but man, is the room itself cool too! you did a grande job. and ps – that nursery is one of my faves too! i tried to do a blue/white gingham headboard after seeing this and couldnt pull it off (kept thinking my bed shoulda been in a little boy nursery!)

Thanks- I love that room too. It's a like a treehouse! I know what you mean about the gingham. I feel like most rooms I envision somehow read, "boy."

I love how easily this room could transition … as the boys grow older, if someone different moves into the room, if the room's function is changed to hang-out, etc in the future … you created such a great envelope that this room can be so many different things. But what it is right now is a super cute room for two cute little boys; it has a fresh, playful feel without being juvenile and it feels very current with the patterns and colors you selected. Robin

Thanks Robin! I am glad you think it could transition bc that's exactly what I was going for. I love walking in there bc it is always bright!

I could lie and say it was a huge undertaking but really I didn't lift a finger. Perk of being pregnant during a DIY?? But really you could handle it for sure!

I love the fabric art you put over the beds. Recently, I found some pre-cut fabric in my local store's discount bin that I wanted to make into pillows. But once I got it home I realized it wasn't enough material to get the right size pillow for my bed. I am now inspired by this post to make the fabric into art like what your put over your children's bed. I will be sure to let you know when I complete my fabric art project, and post about it on my blog:
