Sometimes, blog land can be so pretty and perfect and full of images that make life seem flawless. I don’t know about yall, but my life is far from flawless. In fact, much of the reason I am drawn to decorating is because it makes me happy. It is my little hobby that seems to distract me from stress and make me feel really really happy.
I think it is so important to know what makes you happy and to make time for those things. Whether it is cooking, writing, running, or painting…whatever it is that makes you feel great…make time for it!
Here are my 5 things that make me really happy…
1. Making something inexpensive…
DIY art |
I love to make simple little crafts, and while I am not the most artistic person I feel so happy when I create something I love. The cherry on top for me, is when I can create something out of things I already have at home thus not spending any money or time having to plan ahead. A spur-of-the-moment DIY is medicine to my soul!
2. Creating fun and organization on the fly…
I am specifically speaking to mothers here. After having kids, one of the hardest things I have had to learn to do is “Let go!” Let go of having the perfect house, let go of believing I am always going to be happy in the midst of motherhood. This job can be brutal and some days I feel like my house is a reflection of how badly I am failing. I try to fight those discouraging feelings by doing little things to make myself feel creative and organized. All while learning to ignore the mess in the background.
That first photo is the boys enjoying a little “couch picnic”, the second is the chaos
right under their feet. The organization came into play with the towel under their butts, a wipe for the hands, and healthy snacks served on cutting boards. Not a lot of effort on my part and they think I am the coolest.
3. Stealing from nature…

I have yet to find cheaper accessories than the free stuff I steal out of my backyard.
Some green leaves instantly make my house feel more upscale and don’t even get me started on what a couple of hydrangea blooms can do for a room! See that perfect book-topper back there? Free from the beach…tadow!
4. Rearranging…
Our mudroom has gone from nothing, to my office, to mudroom all within about 6 months.
That’s just that little space…I have moved our living room more times than I can count. I am giddy at the thought of changing our nursery to an office, the playroom to a bedroom, and a bedroom to the nursery. Makes my head spin, in a good way!
5. change…
Back in the day I would have never embraced change. I hated it and tried to prevent it as much as possible. It’s only been as I have gotten older and seen the changes in my own life that I have realized the best experiences in my life have been a result of big changes. Now I look forward to the next chapter. I get excited about what’s around the corner. And I try to find ways in which I can switch things up in my life. I finally realize that the best way for me to feel in control of my life and what’s going on is to embrace change! Plus it’s just a lot more fun!
So what are your 5 things??
