For some reason I am always feel like a new year starts in September instead of January. That summer break gave me so much time to recharge so I am coming back refreshed and ready to go! As I shared on Friday there are lots of new things coming this fall and I can’t wait to share more details over the next few days and weeks, but first I am kicking off this new chapter by introducing some creative people.
I was invited by my blog/real life friend Summer to participate in the Tour Through Blogland. Summer shared some sweet words about me in her post, which you can read here. Make sure to poke around her blog…I am still drooling over her home office makeover!
For those of you that are new to my blog, I started my blog as a 30th birthday gift to myself. I wanted an outlet for all my creativity and a place to document my new decorating business. The blog has helped the business and my client projects give me plenty to blog about. Win-win. I am always tweaking things around my house and I love going after new ideas! Outside of all of that, I take care of my three kids and hang with my hubby.
What am I working on right now?
As I mentioned I hit “pause” on most of my work this summer, but I have lots in the works for fall. I am finishing up some great client projects, planning local events, and gearing up for some changes around my house!
How does my work differ from others in my genre?
This is so hard to say since there are a million talented bloggers out there, but I would say that my work is unique because I am self-taught. I did not get my degree in interior design, but I pull from my life-long love of decorating and the things I’ve learned through my own house. Instead of knowing “the rules” I just go with what I like. I think I have a knack for making rooms feel personal and comfortable with a little something unexpected each time.
How does my creative process work?
My creative process probably looks scattered, frantic, and obsessive from the outside, but in my own head it is a strategic process. I like to think I am always aware of inspiration around me whether it be in magazines, nature, or a trip to HomeGoods. I always stash ideas in my mind and then pull them out for the right project. Once a project is underway it’s all about lists, calendars, and more lists. It’s the only way I can stay focused and on track.
How do I write/create what I do?
Like I said, I always start with an inspiration and then organize it all with design boards. I create boards with general ideas and then fine-tune it into a final design. Sometimes it all starts with a color others it’s a specific piece of furniture. When I am really stumped I will look through Pinterest or other blogs for a jumping off point. When it comes to my own house I just do things when the mood strikes. On any given day I might be grabbing some greenery from my yard, rearranging furniture, or painting something. As far as, blogging I try to plan out posts for the month. I have to be ahead in order to keep up with work and family life. I like to sneak off on a Sunday, sip a latte, and bust out a round of post ideas.
And here are some really talented people that I am bringing to the tour today….
So I am breaking the Tour rules a little for my first introduction but, they are so cute I couldn’t help myself! I came across this Daddy-daughter trio on Instagram and immediately fell in love with their story and style. Their outfit inspiration posts are some of my favorites and their jewelry is killer. Although, it’s in their kid section, I am pretty fond of their pom-pom necklaces!
Gunner and Lux
I started collecting vintage jewelry for our four-year old daughter when she was born, knowing there would be a time when she would want to play “dress up” while she danced her way to an imaginary costume ball. Since neither of her dads wear jewelry, we searched thrift stores, antique stores, and asked friends and family for jewelry that they didn’t use. Within just a few short months we had collected a treasure chest of amazing jewels.
As our daughter grew, she picked out the jewels she wanted to keep, and I decided to try my hand at crafting a one-of-a-kind necklace. My daughter wanted to watch, and before I knew it, she was helping me create the necklace.
My first necklace was a huge success, and I decided to start my own jewelry line. My daughter also showed a knack for making jewelry, so after dinner she and I worked on the necklaces together. Using her fine motor skills, she learned how to tie knots, use pliers, and tweezers as she developed her own line of necklaces.
….and that is how Gunner & Lux and LITTLE LUX was born!

Simple Dwellings
Hi, my name is Amber from the design blog Simple Dwellings and I am thrilled to be part of this blog tour! I started my blog back in 2010 as a hobby and a way to talk about my favorite topic… design. It evolved into more when I started my e-design business in 2011. Interior design is such a passion of mine and I feel blessed to now share that with clients! I love to mix various design styles and truly believe beautiful design does not have to cost a fortune. I have always thought a room feels complete when it tells the story of the people who live there! When I am not knee deep in design projects or trying to rearrange my own home, I am off with my wonderful husband and our two amazing kiddos. Hope to see you at my blog soon! 🙂
KR Dixon Designs
Kayla Dixon, Interior Designer behind KR Dixon Designs. A mom to two beautiful little girls and wife to an avid fisherman living in the Pacific NW. Design has always been my first love, ever since I can remember. Helping people discover their own style and love their home is what I love to do. I blog about all things beautiful, share client projects, and what I am up to in my own home…it is a constant work in progress.
This Blogland tour will continue Monday, August 18th with Kayla and Amber answering these questions and introducing more creative people! I hope you have met someone new today and enjoyed hearing a little more of the behind-the-scenes around here!
