I have been working on plans for a client’s library and I was thinking that this go-round I’d stick with lots of neutrals. You may remember their living room, here. They have a room right off of their entry with built-ins and it is just screaming for layers and layers of neutrals to create a luxurious formal sitting room feel. Here is some of the inspiration I am working from…
That last picture is my favorite but their room will have a lot less white. Think more warm neutrals, but the same fresh look. I decided to bring Waterlogue into this presentation just to try something new. I love how it captures the feel of the design board just to convey, in another way, the vision I have for their room.
As you can see in my boards, I went to them with a variety of upholstered neutral fabrics. I am a color girl at heart, but when I am helping someone with their house I always approach it with a little caution. I want to present things that will fit their taste for years to come and most often that means I feel comfortable with neutrals. I guess at this stage in my “career” I am not looking to shock anyone with too bold of a choice. Even as I write that, I know that is is probably not the best mentality. I should trust my gut and be hopeful that my overall vision will assure people even if I am making them step out of their box.
When I went to present these boards I was reminded of those very thoughts. I brought lots of examples and swatches for couches, all of them playing it safe in neutral. I was going to add color, but I assumed they would be more comfortable taking a plunge into color with some pops here and there. I showed them one last couch, more as a side note about a possible style than the color, but they stopped me and inquired about doing “a more bold color” like what I was showing them in the picture. Funny thing is, I had planned to bring this color in just not in the main piece. So now, with my clients encouragement we are looking to create a bolder version of my original ideas. Funny how the client had to make me step out of my comfort zone. Be brave or go home from now on I guess?!
Here is the new contender in all her glory….now we just wait to see if hubby is good with peacock blue!!
I hope they bite the bullet because now my mind is crazy with possibilities! Once we have nailed down the couch we will move on to my favorite parts…the textures and patterns: rug, curtains, pillows, and such. We also are going to hunt for the perfect desk to slip in a corner of this room. Here are some of our contenders:
Making plans is fun! I’ll keep ya updated as we go!

I think we all "play it safe" sometimes with clients … but I have learned to always throw in something true to myself. I believe it is our job to take them out of their comfort zone for the experience … whether they buy it or not!! Love your direction! xo
