Help!!
I decided to make a major change in my kitchen yesterday totally on a whim.
Blame Emily A. Clark and this post!
Our kitchen is one of my least favorite rooms in our house because it is dark and small.
I have always dreamed of a light and breezy kitchen but a major renovation
is out of the question right now. So open shelving seemed like the perfect quick-fix.
Unfortunately my cabinets are not symmetrical on either side of the sink
so I am really torn on whether I like the new look.
Here are things before I started…
Sorry for the HORRIBLE pictures.
My new camera actually came today right after I started changing everything!
The sink has a window right above it and there are cabinets on either side but as you can see,
they are different sizes. I figured it would look more balanced if I made both of those open.
But, now I am debating on whether I should put the doors back on the cabinet to the right of the window and then make the other side all open.
All of this would be open.
I really hate when things just don’t feel right!!
I know these pictures don’t help you visualize much but please give me your thoughts!!
Keep it how it is?
Only do open shelves on the left side?
Put the doors back on and forget the whole thing (I really hope not bc I gave myself a backache doing this little project!!)
Be honest!

I'm thinking I like the idea of the left side being open…instead of both sides of the sink.

After sleeping on it I am even considering doing just the right side. We have that other cabinet/hutch that has glass doors so it may be a little too much going on in the right side. Right??

I can't "see" the entire room, but I had an "Epiphany"! Don't hide like MC tries to do…
What about removing all the doors, on both sides, and painting the inside of all the cabinets the wall color. It's just an "Epiphany" sometimes they need to be tweaked a lot. Consider this Phase One of the idea and go from there. Do you have enough stuff that would look orderly to have all that open?

We have very little cabinet space so I have to have at least some that I can close to hide the plastic cups and kids plates, etc. I did mention the idea to my husband though yesterday when I was brainstorming and he was not a fan…he said it would like an unfinished kitchen 🙂 I think he was scared for me to go after anything else with the screwdriver.

Beth, girlie those pregnancy hormones are making you a widdle loco!! Put those doors back up. I know what you are going for Honey but honestly, it ain't working. The Hubs is right.

Ha ha! My mom told him to get the tools away from me 🙂 I think i have a plan to get the look I want without the weirdness but I will show my "afters" for input. I always appreciate it!

I look forward to seeing your after shots! You are the pro and know what you are doing. Hope you know that my last comment was said with humor and love.

Linda- it takes a lot to offend me and I totally understood you were saying it nicely!!

If you do anything I think the L-shaped cabinet between the two windows is where I would focus. With the two windows flanking that cabinet, any visual "weight" that can be removed from that cabinet should really allow those windows to be more "present" in the space. Actually, the more I study the picture that inside wall corner offers a lot of possibilities. I know you said no major renovation can be undertaken, but the removal of a single wall cabinet doesn't cost anything (OK, some DIY time), isn't overly difficult (we've done it), and the cabinet can be saved and reinstalled later if you change your mind 🙂 Perhaps some floating shelves in its place or other type of truly open shelving … but I don't think just removing the door accomplished anything since the heavy cabinet frame is still there. Can't wait to see what you do!

Thanks for articulating what I couldn't–the heavy cabinet frame is the problem!

I understand the situation better. I didn't realize there are two windows. It is a "weight" issue. But removing doors and not doing something else I think will only make it look unfinished. Now if you really want to do a DIY reface the cabinets to a lighter painted color that would compliment the space. A LOT of work and MC won't do it here…..so I gather husbands aren't into refacing!!!!

Robin- your plan would be my preference but I already have my husband signed up for way too many projects to get our house ready for a new child. I would definitely get an eye roll if I even suggested it right now. However it sounds perfect for spring 🙂 You are all right in the "weight" issue and thats what I can't get past. The kids are napping so I am about to go try and work some magic. I will be back with after shots or just to report that things were changed back to the original, closed, version 🙂 Ugh, why do we drive ourselves crazy with decorating?!

I also agree with Robin. I can totally understand the need for change though. I guess my advice now is make sure whatever you store in the "open cabinets" are the ones you use everyday. Otherwise, they are going to collect dusts! Good luck!

That's what I have heard! My husband is already scared he won't put things back the "right" way 🙂

I kind like the cabinets to the left all being open. Maybe I should have read all the other comments to see what the other's were saying…either way, can't wait to see how it turns out!
