It seems like forever ago that I reached out to some blog friends and asked them to come up with a design plan for my living room. I gave them a couple of existing items to work around but otherwise they took the reigns.
It’s been so fun to see all the different ideas for my room and sometimes really confusing as I was easily swayed each week in a new direction. But even though I was influenced some I stayed pretty true to my own vision for the room.
To start this makeover I first looked back through my “living room” pins. I highly suggest looking through your own inspiration boards, if you have them, to hone in on what it is you really love. It’s easy to see something specific in a store and know you love it but when you are trying to come up with a plan for a whole room it can be overwhelming to figure out the overall look you want. You will probably find, as I did, some common threads in the images that caught your eye.
For me, it is clearly blues…
With rustic/natural details, specifically plant life…
And I always like unexpected elements to add a little character…
After looking through some of my favorite bookmarked images I really knew that I wanted a mix of mid-century modern/rustic/coastal. In other words, eclectic.
Here is the design board I put together after I had a good sense of where I wanted this room to go:
A crucial part of the design was a new rug, which was provided to me from RugsUSA. They were generous enough to allow me to choose from their HUGE selection of rugs. I spent a stupid amount of time obsessively thinking about/looking at/stalking people for opinions including my kids/etc.
There were several I really considered, including this neutral option:
And it came down to these three contenders:
It was a really hard decision!! And once that choice was made I had to move on to another impossible decision…lighting. I had never even planned to change our capiz chandelier but then I kept being drawn to images like this…
These wooden chandeliers stole my heart and forced me to ditch my capiz shells!
Next week (God-willing) I will be able to show you all of the changes to my living room. I am am so in love with the room now and cannot wait to see the professional photos (being shot today!!) Thanks for sticking with me through this long process and letting me take my sweet time on all these decisions. And most importantly thanks to the designers who offered their time and creativity, as well as, RugsUSA for contributing the rugs!
